Heneral Luna: The Movie

Heneral Luna: The Movie | BayanMall

Jose Rizal, Andres Bonifacio, Gregorio del Pilar, and Emilio Aguinaldo are just some of our heroes in the Philippines. We can easily recognize them because we study them in our history class and we can read them in our textbooks. Luckily, these heroes had been made into a film in our convenient and I could say it is very helpful to our learning process in school. Hopefully, all of our heroes will be made into a movie and thankfully we have a movie now entitled “Heneral Luna”. It depicts Antonio Luna’s life, one of our heroes.

Heneral Luna

The film, “Heneral luna”, is directed by Jerrold Tarog and produced by Artikulo Uno Productions. It relays the story of General Antonio Luna as he leads the rebellious Filipinos military during the Philippine-American War. The movie starts with the ill feeling towards the American colonizers and undoubtedly end with the death of Antonio Luna.

Heneral Luna Cast

General Antonio Luna is played by John Arcilla. We can see other characters like Emilio Aguinaldo, Joven Hernando, Apolinario Mabini, Gregorio del Pilar, Paco Roman, Eduardo Rusca, Manuel Bernal, and Jose Bernal. They are played by Mon Confiado, Arron Villaflor, Jeffrey Quizon, Paulo Avelino, Joem Bascon, Archie Alemania, Arthur Acuña, and Alex Vincent Medina respectively. I believe these actors are good artist as well.

Heneral Luna - John Arcilla

This movie shows the good and bad sides of Antonio Luna not like what we use to see in a Filipino hero movie where they always highlight the goodness of an individual. In this show, you will see him get hurt, angry, and curse. Plus, you will find yourself effortly laughing with some of the characters and its dialogue

What amazes me with this film is that it is selected to represent our country in the Academy Award or The Oscar 2016 in the category for Best Foreign Language. Hopefully, they could win. Moreover, the movie is now highest-grossing Filipino historical film of all time. What are you waiting for? It’s never been too late to watch this movie. If you do this, you are supporting them and our industry in Philippine movies.

Rodrigo Duterte, I Admire You!

Rodrigo Duterte, I Admire You! | BayanMall

Rodrigo Duterte

If you are a “Dabawenyo” you would probably know Rodrigo Duterte. But if not, I’ll introduce him for you. Rodrigo Duterte is known as Rody or Digong. He has been a mayor in Davao City for seven terms. That makes him the longest mayor in the Philippines He also serve as vice-mayor and congressman in that city. What makes him well known?

Well, it is because of his leadership. During his term of service, Duterte imposed some ordinances like the prevention of selling, serving, drinking and consumption of liquors and alcoholic beverages from 1:00 am until 8:00 am. Not only that, he also sets speed limits around the jurisdiction of Davao and implement the firecracker ban. Because of him, the city is known for its anti-smoking ordinance and the only 911 emergency service in Asia.

Because of these accomplishments, Duterte won the National Literacy Hall of Fame Award for three times. He got the first place in the Outstanding Local Government Unit Highly Urbanized City category. Above all, Davao City is now the 4th safest city in the world. This happens because of his strict control of criminals that lives in the city.

Of course, some people don’t like him. He was accused as being the mastermind of a vigilante group known as Davao Death Squad or DDS. This group was reportedly responsible for the criminal killings in Davao City. In spite of this news, others encourage him to run for president in the Philippines.

Recently, Rodrigo Duterte announced his final decision not to run for the presidency position. Many felt dismay. Naturally, we can’t force him with his decision. All we have to do is respect it. This is the excerpt of his speech. “I therefore beg for everyone’s kind understanding and acceptance of my sincerest apologies. After all, there was no ambition for me to aspire for the presidency. The country does not need me. I find no need for it too. I guess it is fate that wills that our long journey together should end this way.”

I still admire Rodrigo Duterte for his decision. Yes, I’m sad, but it’s okay. For me, he is a great leader. I am thankful for his service in the Davao City. The city improves because of him. Long live Duterte!

Proud Individual Is OFW

Being a worker in abroad, there a lot of things to be proud of. Having this kind of attitude makes them feel happy and satisfied with their outputs. So, what makes an OFW proud of? Here is the list:

*They able to visit another country. Not just visit, they had the opportunity to work there. Plus, they can visit beautiful spots during their break or free time.

*They able to fulfil their dreams. They dream to help their family. They want to support their children in school and give them latest gadgets.

*They have a big heart. They are kind and generous towards others, especially to their loved ones, relatives, friend, and even towards strangers.

*They became instant heroes. This happens because of the sacrifices they made and because of their help in our economic growth.

*They become more beautiful. They now look good because of the physical changes of their appearance.

faith in God

*They still have the faith in God in spite of not attending to a Church service. This is their ally in times of troubles, sorrows, sickness, and adversity. They don’t forget to call Him and ask help.

*They able to endure their hardships. They don’t give up easily because they always remember their purpose in staying in that country.

*They able to speak new languages without proper schooling. They can learn easily and just well to their new environment.

multicultural friends

*They have now  foreign friends. It happens because of their hospitality and great rendered service towards them.

*They serve as our inspiration that anything is possible through constant diligence and patience.

With these reasons, I hope every OFW can say like what Gucci Mane said. I quote, “I’m satisfied and proud of the things I did – even the bumps and the bruises that I’ve had on the way. You fall down, you get up, you brush yourself off and you keep going. And that’s what we’re doing.” It’s good to be alive and be proud of who you are.

Apolinario Mabini, Who is He?

Epy Qizon as Apolinario Mabini

If you have seen the movie Heneral Luna, then good for you. Thank you for supporting our Philippine movie industry. But sadly, there are rumors in this film. Epy Quizon is one of the main characters of the movie. He played the role of Apolinario Mabini. Surprisingly, he was asked by a group of college students why his character never stood up in the film. Not only that, there is also a tweet from a person who overhears a couple after watching the movie. The girl asked his partner why Apolinario Mabini just seated for the whole time in the movie. On top of this, this news brought disappointment to our President  Benigno Aquino III.

epy Quizon

I can’t believe as well. I even told myself, maybe they are just joking. But the truth is, it’s not. What’s happening to us Filipinos, especially the students, youth, and even children? Do your teachers or instructors teach you not well? Hopefully not.

a. mabini

Who is Apolinario Mabini? Apolinario Mabini is one of our heroes. He is  known for being “The Sublime Paralytic”. He is also called “The Brains of the Revolution”. Why sublime paralytic? Simply because he was paralyzed or crippled due to having a polio in 1895. This leads him to be able not use his two legs. Regardless of his sickness, he did use his brain for fighting our sought after freedom. He wrote many things like presidential laws, Philippine constitution, and values for Filipinos. These things made him indeed a noble person. He also participated the revolution in time of Spaniards until the Americans regime. He became the adviser of Emilio Aguinaldo.

Optimistically, this serves as a reminder that we ought to know our heroes and study them well. Let’s dig more into our history and ask ourselves why they became our hero. I look forward to the day where more Filipino heroes are featured in a movie. This can really help to educate the youngsters mind and adults as well.

Hugot Lines from Heneral Luna

Hugot Lines from Heneral Luna | BayanMall

Heneral Luna is a historical biopic film made by Jerrold Tarog. Since it was shown on September 9, the netizens make some noise by creating a funny post and some “hugot” lines. They use the hashtag #HugotHeneral as their tribute to the awesomeness of the movie. Indeed, I laugh and made me ponder to its thrown hitting lines. Let me share some of it.

Hugot Heneral Luna

#Bayan o sarili, pumili ka (nation or yourself, you choose)! This hugot line made me think what matter most? If you love your country, definitely you’ll fight for it without reservation. We should stand up and not be coward. Because if you do it, you’ll not do a favor for yourself, but for others as well.

Hugot Heneral Luna (negosyo o kalayaan)

#Negosyo o kalayaan (business or freedom)? I’m hoping our politician reflected on this hugot line. Many aspire to be elected as an official in our country. Yet, I can’t help but ask myself, do they do it to serve us or for their selves to acquire more wealth? Hopefully, not the latter.

Hugot Heneral Luna

#May mas malaki tayong kalaban sa mga Amerikano – ang ating sarili (we have a bigger contender than the American – ourselves). Certainly, our number one enemy is ourself. If we don’t overcome our own anxiety and insecurities in life, then we can’t face other people. We should love our self, be contented of what we have, and recognize the blessings in our life.

Hugot Heneral Luna

#Kalaban ang kalaban. Kalaban ang kakampi, nakakapagod. (We are fighting our opponent. The opponent is our ally, this is exhausting.) What hurt us most is that the one we thought who is our ally or friend is the one will betray us in the end. Isn’t very tiring? We should be very careful who we trust nowadays. We don’t know what they will do or say behind our back.

Hugot Heneral Luna (watak-watak)

#Malaking trabaho ang ipagkaisa ang bansang watak-watak (It is a great job to unite a fragmented nation). Truthfully, it is hard to ask someone to cooperate with us if he doesn’t want to. We all know that if we are fighting with the same cause, it can be done easily if only we are united. Being alone is not enough. Unity should start with us.

Actually, there are a lot more hugot or drawing out emotions lines from this film. I only pick a few that really touches my heart. You can share some of it to me if you like, but first, watch the movie if you don’t see it.

Twilight Reimagined Gender Switch

Twilight Reimagined Gender Switch | BayanMall

Who doesn’t love the character of Bella Swan and Edward Cullen? Hopefully, all. But if you are, it’s a good news for you then. Stephenie Meyer, the author of the Twilight saga, release a new book entitled “Life and Death: Twilight Reimagined”. She did it to commemorate the 10th year anniversary of this epic vampire romance story.

life & death

The Life and Death novel is the story of a female vampire and a human teenage boy. It has a 442 pages. This is just a swapping of gender characters of her Twilight book. This means that Bella Swan is now a boy named Beau (short for Beaufort) and Edward Cullen is now Edythe. Are you now interested and curious about this concept? You should be.

Stephenie Meyer does this to defend herself from the critics. She told that Bella is not a “damsel in distress.” but a “human in distress.” She explained that Bella is just “a normal human being, surrounded on all sides by people who are basically superheroes and supervillains.” Also, Bella, have been criticized for being “too consumed with her love interest” and “as if that’s somehow just a girl thing.” In response, Meyer said, “so I thought if I switched it around a little bit to see how a boy does, and you know, it’s about the same.”

cullens & jacob

I’m really excited for these changes. Not only Bella and Edward have switched gender, but also the other characters except Charlie and Renée who are Beau’s parents. Jacob Black, Bella’s werewolf friend, has become Julie. Don’t forget as well the Cullens which is now Carine, Earnest, Royal, Eleanor, Jessamine and Archie. At twilight, they are Carlisle, Esme, Rosalie, Emmett, Jasper, and Alice respectively.

For me, it doesn’t matter what gender you are on when it comes to love, we all become vulnerable and weak. What are you waiting for? Grab a copy of this book. As you read it, tell me what are the similarities and difference between Twilight series and Life and Death: Twilight Reimagined.

Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) As A Hero

Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW)  As A Hero | BayanMall

OFW Hero

Do you consider OFWs as a hero? Let me help you decide if they are. But first, let’s define what a hero is or what qualities they possess. The word hero is a person or character who, in the face of danger and adversity or from a position of weakness, displays courage, bravery or self-sacrifice. From its definition, we get the trait of a true hero. They are courageful, brave, and unselfish, which makes them a noble and a good model.

Next, let use the adjectives if they fit to an OFW. First is the word, courageful. OFWs have the strength in the face of pain or grief. When I say pain and grief, these are the moments when they felt alone, sad, ill, and homesick. They have endured these emotions just to stay in their work and able to send money at home.

Second word is brave. They gamble or risk their life in another country, not knowing what will happen to them as they arrive in their designated area. They don’t know the culture of that place, but still they able to handle their self. They continue to face their unpleasant conditions of their working place and the behavior of their workmates and manager. On top of this, they don’t show their fears to their boss even if they are already afraid.

OFW Remit

Third, unselfish. OFWs think of their family first before they think of themselves. They sacrifice a lot for the sake of others. They strive hard to ensure that their kids’ future would be bright and that they would live a life that they dream of. They don’t care if they experience difficulty as long their left families have an ease and comfort life.

Besides of these attributes that a hero has. There are two things that stick out of being an OFW that makes them a hero. One is their great sacrifice of being apart with family, especially their children. It includes as well their disconnection during the celebration of special occasion that they truly treasure and miss. Plus, it is hard for them not to see their child grows beside them.

Two, they uplift our economy through the remittances that they send in the Philippines. It alleviates poverty and creates stable cash flow and circulation in our economy. They keep our country afloat by providing liquidity amid global financial crisis. In short, they just don’t secure the needs of their family, but our country as well.

OFW Bayani

Now, hopefully you can say in your mind that indeed OFWs are our modern hero in this time. But of course, you don’t have to be an OFW to become a hero. I know in your own simple way, you can be a hero. You can do this by giving your time in helping others and making them smile. Surely then, you can be a hero in that person’s heart.
