Repost: What It’s Like Being BFFs with Jasmine Curtis?

People may put Jasmine Curtis on a pedestal but I’ve always seen her in a distinct light. We’ve known each other since grade school and it’s made all the difference. We were bus mates but our five-year age gap never really allowed us any opportunity to talk in school. My memory of an eight-year-old Jasmine was a timid girl who was always in the corner of the bus, quiet and anxious with all the upperclassmen.

She left for Australia to continue her studies and would come back to the Philippines for vacation. I can’t exactly remember how we started to reconnect, but we saw each other somewhere and we just started talking again. That was in 2011 and we’ve been inseparable ever since. We’re the clingy type of friends, so we don’t get sick of each other even though we’re together almost every day.

When people ask me if I get annoyed when we’re in the mall and people stare at her or ask for pictures, my answer is always no. I’ve seen her grow as a person and as an artist so it delights me to see that she’s being recognized for her craft. As for getting special treatment because of her celebrity status, I have to admit that’s what I like best about her: She never uses the celebrity card to get things. If we have to wait in line to be seated at a restaurant, we wait. On some occasions, establishments tell us we can cut the line but Jasmine always gracefully declines and respects the other people who’ve lined up ahead of us.

3 (1)

My friends who’ve met her are always surprised at how humble she is. I guess living in Australia has shaped her to be this way. Back in Oz, she would clean the dishes, ride the train, do laundry with her mom; in short, she had a typical teenage life. Although careful with the reputation she has to protect, she still carries with her a free-spirited vibe and the independence she gained from living abroad.

Our friendship is as normal as any other friendship. We’re just two girls who love going to each others’ houses unannounced so we can pig out or watch movies together, who will clear their schedules whenever one needs a shoulder to cry on, give long sermons whenever one of us makes a mistake, and laugh at each others’ silliness. It’s a no filter kind of friendship, just how best friends should be.

Duterte offers legal aid to victims of ‘tanim bala’

Davao City (CNN Philippines) — Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte is offering his services to all overseas Filipino workers (OFW) who could fall prey to the so-called “tanim bala” scheme at airports on their return to the Philippines.

He made the offer after several photos came out in social media showing the luggage of travelers bearing stickers stating that it did not contain bullets or any illegal items.

Some of the stickers say to contact Duterte in case of any emergency.

In a text message, Duterte said he would welcome any OFW who would seek his legal service which he is offering for free.

At the same time, Duterte called on President Benigno Aquino III to replace all personnel at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport.

The call came after the mayor made public his suspicion that a syndicate operating at the airport is behind the incidences of “tanim bala.”

In his weekly television program Gikan sa Masa, Para sa Masa on Sunday (November 1), Duterte said the growing number of incidents of ammunition found inside the luggage of passengers had become too impossible to believe.

Duterte warned all airport personnel to stop planting bullets inside passengers’ bags.

Miss Universe 2015 pays courtesy call on Philippine Consulate General in New York

A few weeks after her Miss Universe 2015 coronation, Ms Pia Alozo Wurtzbach paid a courtesy call on the Philippine Consulate General in New York last January 13.

Philippine Consul General and Mrs. Mario De Leon welcomed Ms. Wurtzbach in the Boardroom and engaged her in a discussion on her advocacies, namely HIV awareness, disaster relief, and the fight against cyberbullying. Consul General De Leon opened the possibility of teaming up with the Consulate General to help her advance her causes, raising the profile of Filipinos in the US Northeast and the whole US.

In line with her HIV awareness campaign, Ms. Wurtzbach met with UNAIDS-NY, who gave her vital information on the state of HIV-AIDS globally and gave inputs on projects that she can collaborate with. She was accompanied by Miss Universe Organization President Paula Shugart. Ms. Wurtzbach sat down as well with the President of APICHA Community Health Center, an organization that provides medical and health assistance for underserved and vulnerable people, especially Asians, Pacific Islanders, the LGBT Community, and individuals living with and affected by HIV/AIDS.

Ms. Wurtzbach also met with the leaders of Friends Indeed, a Filipino community charity organization that sends medical, humanitarian, and relief missions to the Philippines especially in times of disasters, such as after typhoon Sendong in Cagayan De Oro.

As a way to help elevate the presence of Filipinos in mainstream American society, Ms. Wurtzbach also met with the Executive Board of the Philippine Independence Day Council, Inc. (PIDCI), to arrange for her participation in the Philippine Independence Parade later in June. PIDCI offered her a float at the Parade which she can use to project her advocacies and even speak before an audience.

A short press conference was held afterwards, with members of the Filipino-American media.

You think all Pinoy taxi drivers are unscrupulous? We’ll just leave this story here

Motoring Tales

If you live in Metro Manila and do even just a bit of commuting, then you know that we have some of the worst taxicab drivers in the world. Not only do many of them tend to be choosy when it comes to picking up passengers, a lot of them also overcharge whoever is lucky enough to get handpicked along their route. And let’s not even talk about those who rig their meters so that the fare gets significantly padded.

Even sadder and more alarming, recent news reports tell us that there are cabbies who have drug problems or anger-management issues. Little wonder that app-based transport services like Uber has soared in popularity in this country.

But every now and then, you’ll encounter a taxi driver with the kind of integrity our congressmen can only dream of. A guy named Rommel Lopezrecently met one such cabbie, and he tells this story (in italics):

Meet Mr. Eugenio Ventura, 63 years old, a taxi driver. I hailed him at the LRT Roosevelt Station to go to Mother Ignacia Avenue. Sabi niya: “Sir, pasok lang. Hindi ako namimili ng pasahero. Kahit saan kayo pupunta, ihahatid ko kayo.”

I thought he was just trying hard to be nice. But I was wrong. He wasn’t trying hard. He wasn’t even trying at all. Through that very short trip, I learned how happy he is for being a taxi driver and how he still drives for his youngest kid, who is a working student and is about to graduate in college. He said he is just doing his job as a taxi driver to be nice to his passengers, because “kayo ang pinanggagalingan ng aming kabuhayan.” It was sad to know that his operator had deducted something from his earnings (I wasn’t able to catch exactly what it was)–he ended up bringing home a meager P1,200 as his Christmas bonus.

When I reached my destination, the meter read P78.50. I gave him a P100 bill. I decided not to get the change, but he hurriedly gave me P20 and my receipt. I told him that he should keep it, and that it was my tip for him. He refused, saying that I deserved the change because it was the right thing to do. I told him: “Okay, yung P1.50 na lang ang tip ko. Huwag niyo nang tanggihan.” He smiled.

“Manong, may isa pa akong request,” I said. “Kunan ko kayo ng picture at i-share ko sa Facebook para malaman ng marami kung ano ang isang tunay na taxi driver na Pinoy.” He laughed so hard.

Don’t you wish all taxi drivers were like Mang Eugenio?

Vampire Diaries Season 7, Why Watch?

Vampire Diaries Season 7, Why Watch? | BayanMall

the vampire

We all know that “The Vampire Diaries” is an American supernatural-fantasy horror television series. The show is based on a book by L.J. Smith of the same name. It can be seen in The CW channel. Many are in love with the characters of Elena, Damon, Stefan, Caroline, Bonnie, Matt, and many more. Their villains are really hateable, who would forget how evil Kai is. I’m sure that just mentioning his name will make you curse and blame him of our dear Elena to sleep forever. Why should you continue to watch this show in their season 7?

elena gilbert sleeping

First, It’s because you are interested to find-out how the show will continue without the main character Elena Gilbert. I’m sure many are sad and cry to the farewell of Elena in the previous season. Truthfully, I could not accept it at first. I even ask myself, “why did they do that?”. It is not just and fair. If not for Elena, Damon and Stefan will not be back in Mystic Falls and others characters have a great bond with her. It’s just like they are all links to her. I know The Vampire Diaries season 7 will be okay without her. That’s why I am intrigued how this series will manage without a piece that connects all the characters.

vampire diaries loveteam

Second, It’s how they make their love team and love triangles mix up. First, we have Elena, Stefan, and Damon. Then, comes Katherine. Before, we have Caroline and Matt. The next thing, we have is Caroline and Tyler. Now, because Elena is gone, there is a possibility of (BaMon) Bonnie & Damon. I am still rooting for DElena (Damon & Elena). Well, obviously, SteLena (Stefan & Elena) is over and SteRoline (Stefan & Caroline) is rising up. Whatever couples, they form, our hearts melt and can’t keep smiling.

Vampire Diaries-Heretics

Lastly, It’s because of the hybrid concepts. Previously, we have a mixture of a vampire and a wolf, in person of Klaus Mikaelson. Currently, we have heretics, a witch and a vampire hybrid. These are Valerie, Nora, Mary Louise, Beau, and Malcolm. They are led by Lilian Salvatore with Enzo in their side. You’ll probably wonder how will Damon, Stefan, Bonnie, Caroline, and Matt defeat the heretics. They are so powerful. You should better watch them out. These are my reasons why you should watch the vampire diaries. How about you? What’s your reason?

Everyone is a fan of a basketball, especially the Filipinos. They cheered the team of Gilas Pinas in the 2015 FIBA Asia Championship. This tournament is organized by FIBA Asia. It’s now their 28th year. The host country is China. The venue of the game is held in Changsha, Hunan. The winner of this tournament will qualify for the FIBA Basketball World Cup.

gilas pinas team

In the preliminary round, the sixteen country is divided into four groups of four. Gilas Pinas are in the Group B along with Palestine, Hong Kong, and Kuwait. On September 23, the Philippines was lost to the Palestine with the score 73 against 75 but on the next day, September 24, the Gilas won against Hong Kong. The Philippines earn the score of 101 while Hong Kong got only 50. Luckily, on September 25, Gilas emerges victorious in opposing Kuwait with scores of 110-64. This lead them to qualified in the second round.

In the second round, there are now two groups. Philippines is in Group E together with Iran, Japan, India, Palestine, and Hong Kong. Gilas faces the Japan on September 27. Gladly, they won with the score of 73-66. On the next day, September 28, the Philippines encounter Iran. Fortunately, they are again victors with 87-73 score. When September 29 came, the Gilas opposing team India was defeated by 99-65 score. Their winnings lead them in the quarterfinals of the game.

gilas pinas defeat

In the quarterfinals, the Philippines faced the Lebanon on October 1. Gilas won with the score of 82 against Lebanon with 70 scores. After that, The Gilas encounter the Japan for the semifinals on October 2. Again, they emerge successful with 81 against 70 scores of Japan. This lead them to fight China in the final round on October 3. But sadly, the Gilas was defeated by China with the score of 67-78, respectively.

Personally, I really thought Gilas would make it as winners in 2015 FIBA Asia. They fought a good fight, but in spite of the result, we are still proud of them. Long live Philippines!

Fourth Power, Who Are They?

Fourth Power

Would you agree when I say Filipinos are talented? Well, I’ll say yes. They are musically inclined, especially in singing. For those who will say they are not, let me prove it to you. Have you heard the group called “Fourth Power”? I think you knew them. They are now one of the contestant in “X Factor UK”. This show is now on their 12 season.

The Fourth Power group is composed of siblings namely: Almira, Celena, Mylene and Irene. They are known as “Cercado Sisters”. They lived in Santiago City, Philippines. They flew to London to audition for that prestigious singing talent. The judges were impressed as they gave their own rendition of “Bang Bang” by Ariana Grande, Jessie J, and Nicki Minaj. This qualified them to enter their “boot camp”. After that, the judges again are impressed as they performed in “six-chair challenge”. They did the song “Show Me How You Burlesque” by Christina Aguilera. This permit them to enter the “judges’ houses”. I can’t wait for them to do the live show. Hope they could outlast the other groups which handle by Cheryl Fernandez-Versini.

What amaze me with this group is their experience in joining another contest. They won “Pinoy Idol” and “It’s Showtime” on the year 2012 in the Philippines. While in 2014, they reached the semifinal round of “Superstar K6” in South Korea. By that time, they are known as “MICA” which came from the initials of their first name. They participated also in the World Championships of Performing Arts (WCOPA) twice. First in 2006 under the category of junior vocal group and in 2013, in senior vocal group. Eventually, they won and they were called as “Gollayan Sisters” that time. Beside of their success in singing, they experienced defeat as well. But this didn’t stop them to continue in singing. They even had two million views in YouTube and album entitled “Unstoppable”. Because of their exposure, they are invited to play at many private parties and functions.

My prayers goes to Fourth Power. I wish they could make it to the final round of “X Factor”. But for the mean time, let us support them and continue to watch the show.

Love Team AlDub, Why Adore?

Love Aldub

Everybody nowadays adores the Aldub love team. They have been the most talked about couple since the month of July. They are even trending worldwide, especially in the social media sites like Twitter and Facebook. But have you ever find out what makes them so phenomenal and big. Let me help you find some answer why people adore them so much.

First, it is because we get “kilig as we watch them make some dubsmash and the “pabebe” wave. But I think it is on the cute smile of Alden and the reaction of Yaya Dub to him. Indeed, they had the chemistry of being lovers.

ALDUB love team

Second, it is because of the forbidden love concept of their story. I know everybody could relate when it comes to forbidden love. I bet you have one. The thing is that love grows when you fight for it and it is worth every effort for doing such. Just like what Mark Twain said, “The more things are forbidden, the more popular they become.”

Third, it is because of the uniqueness of the show. Who would have thought a noon time variety show would have a KalyeSerye portion in their segment? I guess, no one. Take note as well, the setting is done mostly in the barangays and it is a live show. Furthermore, the couple communication is through dubsmash and fansigns. That makes them distinct.

aldub love pair

Lastly, it is because of their great actors. For me, Wally Bayola deserves the credit much. Without his role as Lola Nidora, there will be no conflict. I believe you can’t deny the fact that every time Wally switch to different roles, you can’t help yourself but laugh. There is something in him, especially when he begins to act. Don’t forget as well Lola Nidora’s two sisters. Having them both makes more of the show fun. Of course our dear Yaya Dub is such wonderful, particularly when her lips move. The way she does it makes her more beautiful and attractive.

I know there is more reasons to it but I hope you are satisfied with my response. One thing for sure is that we love them and will still continue to support their love story. I believe there is still more to look forward to that show. We love and adore AlDub!
